Cross Currents, now a recurring piece of the New York Theatre Ballet repertoire, was first performed in London on July 31, 1964. The title comes from the way the three dancers' paths frequently intersect, and from the original rhythmic qualities of the ballet, wherein each dancer had their own, different rhythms, yet would harmonize at the end of the phrase. The original music, “Rhythm Studies for Player Piano” was written by Conlon Nancarrow.
